Washington Match 4: Four Numbers, Three Prizes and One Easy Mix-Up

Understand Washington Match 4’s four-of-24 format, fixed prizes and the difference between any-prize odds and winning more than a single entry costs.

A game called Match 4 sounds as though it might ask for a four-digit number. Washington’s version asks for something quite different: four separate numbers from 1 through 24. Understanding that before filling out a playslip saves a lot of confusion later.

It also has a prize chart you can read without waiting for a jackpot to grow or a multiplier to appear. The useful questions are which numbers matched, whether the award exceeds what you spent, and which drawing the ticket actually covers.

Four separate numbers, rather than one four-digit string

A $2 play uses four different numbers between 1 and 24. You can choose them yourself or request Quick Pick. A selection such as 2, 8, 17 and 24 is valid.

Those values are four selections, even though two contain two digits. The line is not the four-digit string 2817, and there is no reason to break 17 into a separate 1 and 7. Zero is outside the pool, and repeating a number inside one selection does not create four different numbers.

Order does not change the selected set. The numbers 24, 17, 8 and 2 describe the same combination as 2, 8, 17 and 24. Looking for a way to rearrange a near miss will not turn it into a different outcome.

When using a number tool, confirm that Washington Match 4 is selected. A tool displaying four positions limited to digits zero through nine would describe a different format.

Read the whole prize chart in one pass

The standard awards are $2 for matching two numbers, $20 for three and $10,000 for all four. Zero or one match does not reach a prize category.

Suppose you entered 2, 8, 17 and 24. If the result is 2, 8, 17 and 23, you matched three and the chart gives $20. The 24 being only one away from 23 adds nothing, and the three matches do not also collect several separate two-match awards.

If the result is 2, 8, 11 and 20, you matched two and the award is $2. If the result is 2, 8, 17 and 24, you matched the complete set and reach the top category. It is exact matching within the purchased play, not how close the other numbers felt.

Check separate plays independently. Two matches on one line and two on another cannot be combined into a four-match top prize, even when all four drawn numbers appear somewhere on the ticket.

The ten-thousand-dollar prize does not need a quiet night

Washington’s Lottery says the $10,000 top prize is not divided among winners and does not roll after a drawing. Another winning entry therefore does not turn that stated award into a shared jackpot under the published explanation.

That differs from Washington Lotto, whose jackpot grows and can be shared. Waiting for Match 4 to have several drawings without a top winner does not create the same kind of growing jackpot opportunity.

The headline is also a prize amount, not a personalized take-home figure after any applicable deductions. Use the official validation and claim process for an actual win rather than treating a copied result screen as proof of payment.

Any prize is a broader outcome than a profit

The operator publishes overall prize odds of about 1 in 8.70. That includes the $2 award for two matches, which equals the cost of one basic play. A prize can return your stake without putting you ahead.

You can see the distinction by counting the possible drawing sets. Four numbers chosen from 24 produce 10,626 combinations. Against one selected set, exactly 1,140 of those possible results match two numbers, 80 match three and one matches all four.

There are therefore 1,221 prize-producing results out of 10,626, which explains the rounded overall figure. Only the 81 results with three or four matches pay more than a single $2 entry costs. That is approximately 1 in 131.2, calculated from the stated format and prize chart.

This is a per-play calculation, before any deductions, with no other purchases included. It is not the chance of recovering a whole evening’s spending or a schedule that predicts when a player will win. Buying 132 entries does not guarantee one of them reaches the larger categories.

Check tonight versus a future date

Match 4 drawings are scheduled every night at 8 p.m. Pacific. The official page lists a sales suspension beginning at 7:45 p.m., so establish the applicable date when buying near the cutoff rather than assuming a ticket belongs to that evening.

Washington offers purchases covering up to 25 consecutive drawings and advance dates within the stated range. Read the dates on the actual ticket. Favorite numbers matching tonight do not establish a win if you only bought them for yesterday.

For several covered dates, make a small record of which results you have checked and retain the issued ticket while entries remain outstanding. If you redeem an earlier win, follow the operator’s instructions for preserving those remaining entries.

A short routine that prevents the avoidable mistakes

Before leaving the retailer, check the game name, four selected numbers and drawing dates. After the drawing, compare exact values one play at a time, read the applicable category and have an actual prize validated through official channels.

Use the Washington lottery directory when comparing local games, including Hit 5. For Match 4 itself, keep two ideas clear: the selections are numbers from a 24-number pool, and a $2 prize on a $2 play is a returned stake rather than a profit. Those distinctions are more useful than trying to find a pattern in yesterday’s result.
