A free Hit 5 ticket can look like the least interesting thing in a wallet until its own drawing has happened. Washington's Lottery recently reported a cashpot won from a free entry, a useful reminder that a prize consisting of another ticket still needs its own result check. It is an entry into a later event, rather than cash already recovered or paper that can safely be forgotten.
The paid game uses five different numbers from 1 through 42 and costs $1 per play. Its top prize is called the cashpot, and matching two numbers belongs to a free-ticket category. Those facts are simple enough; the practical work is keeping the right entry, drawing and prize type together.
A valid line has five distinct selections through forty-two
Take 3, 12, 21, 33, 42 as an example. All five values are inside the pool, and no main number is repeated. There is no selected bonus ball to add, so a sixth number does not give the line another route to the cashpot.
The main values form an unordered combination. If the official result contains those same five in a different order, it is still the same complete match. Sorting them helps your eyes compare the lists; it does not improve the chance of winning.
Our Washington Hit 5 selector follows the current range. Older Hit 5 descriptions may show a different pool, so a familiar-looking tool is worth checking before its numbers reach a playslip.
Two matches produce an entry rather than a cash payment
The operator's current chart lists a free Hit 5 ticket for two matches. Suppose the example line shares only 12 and 33 with the official result. That identifies the two-match category; it does not turn the entire purchase into a cash refund.
After validation, keep the new entry and inspect the drawing information attached to it. Do not check the new ticket against the result that made the old one a winner. One result awards the free entry, while another decides what that entry returns.
The lottery's September 2026 account of a free-ticket cashpot winner illustrates why the final check matters. It does not show that free entries are more likely to win than paid selections, or that receiving one creates momentum toward a jackpot. The entry still faces its own drawing.
Three matches and four matches have different cash categories
Washington currently lists $15 for three matches and $150 for four. If your ticket is 3, 12, 21, 33, 42 and the result is 3, 12, 21, 34, 40, the line has three matches. The nearby 34 does not count toward your 33, and the category comes from the exact shared values.
A row matching four uses that higher category rather than also collecting a second three-match amount from a subset of its numbers. Separate purchased rows can each qualify; smaller subsets extracted from one row are not extra plays.
For a useful comparison, Georgia Fantasy 5 uses the same five-from-42 selection format but different payment arrangements. Matching probabilities can align while the money paid for a category does not. Use Washington's chart for a Washington ticket.
The cashpot figure belongs to a drawing
Hit 5's cashpot starts at $100,000 and grows until a complete match wins. The operator describes sharing when there are multiple qualifying winners, so an advertised figure should not be treated as a promise of that full amount separately for every winning ticket.
A guide does not need to freeze today's headline into its explanation. Check the live operator information when the drawing's current amount matters, and use official validation to settle any ticket that appears to contain a substantial prize.
This also keeps the comparison with other local games honest. A larger headline, a smaller pool and a different entry price are separate features, rather than three ways of saying one ticket is automatically better.
Five from forty-two means 850,668 complete combinations
There are 850,668 unordered ways to select the five numbers. One fixed line therefore has a one-in-850,668 chance of matching the whole result. Washington rounds the figure on its public chart, so a rounded display and the exact combination count can describe the same event.
The overall-prize odds include the smaller categories, including the free-ticket outcome. They do not describe how often a player should expect the cashpot, nor how often a purchase returns a cash profit.
A line does not become due because it lost repeatedly. The same applies to a particular number absent from recent results. The count of possible complete combinations is unchanged by how long a player has been watching.
Advance entries need an actual date check
Washington currently conducts Hit 5 drawings every night, and the operator explains both consecutive-draw purchases and purchases for a specified future date. Those are reasons to read the printed drawing coverage rather than assume the nearest result is yours.
If a ticket spans several drawings, check each applicable result independently. Matches do not accumulate across dates, and a free ticket issued after validation has its own coverage to track.
The Washington lottery directory keeps Hit 5 separate from Lotto, Match 4 and Pick 3. For this game, the helpful routine is to count five selections against the right drawing, identify cash versus free-entry prizes and keep checking any ticket that still has a result ahead of it.
