Virginia Pick 3: The Middle Digit Does Not Count on a Split Pair

Check Virginia Pick 3 Split Pair entries using the first and last positions, compare pair and full-number awards, and distinguish a fifty-cent stake from a fifty-fifty wager.

The X on a Virginia Pick 3 Split Pair ticket is not a digit you forgot to select. It identifies the middle position that the wager does not require you to match. You are buying a condition on the two outside positions, not a loose match of any two digits anywhere in the result.

That makes Split Pair different from both an ordinary three-digit entry and the adjacent Front Pair and Back Pair options. The difference matters when a result looks almost right.

Read 4X8 as two fixed positions

Use 4X8 as an illustrative Split Pair purchase. It qualifies when the first drawn digit is 4 and the last is 8. Results such as 408, 438 and 498 satisfy that condition. The middle position can contain any digit from 0 through 9, including a repeated outside digit.

Results 480 and 848 do not qualify. The former ends in zero; the latter starts in eight. Both contain familiar digits, but neither has the required outside positions.

On retail tickets the unwagered position is represented by X. The rules say it is grayed out in online pair plays. In either presentation, check the two fixed positions rather than trying to interpret the display as an incomplete Exact Order entry.

Do not move a pair to a different location

Front Pair 48X needs the first two digits to be 4 then 8. Back Pair X48 needs the last two digits to be 4 then 8. Split Pair 4X8 needs the outside digits. Those are three separate conditions.

For a hypothetical result of 438, Split Pair 4X8 qualifies, Front Pair 48X does not, and Back Pair X48 does not. If the result changes to 483, the Front Pair qualifies instead.

Write the printed pattern beside the result if you are checking several tickets together. It is much easier to spot a misplaced pair on paper than in a conversation where everyone keeps saying “I had four and eight.” The ticket’s chosen style settles the question.

Match the award to the purchased amount

Virginia’s base pair award is $50 for a $1 wager or $25 for fifty cents. The base chance for a specified pair is 1 in 100, compared with 1 in 1,000 for a specified Exact Order selection.

Suppose the ordinary result is 438. A $1 Split Pair 4X8 pays $50. A $1 Exact Order 438 pays $500. A $1 Exact Order 468 does not qualify merely because its first and last positions agree.

Pair play recognizes more possible full results but has a smaller award. You cannot buy the smaller pair wager and then upgrade it to the Exact award when the middle digit happens to agree with a number you had in mind.

Fifty cents and 50/50 mean different things

A fifty-cent wager is an amount. Virginia’s 50/50 option is a particular $1 purchase split between Exact Order and Any Order for the full three-digit selection. It is not another name for Split Pair or for an ordinary fifty-cent entry.

For example, saying “fifty-fifty on 438” does not communicate the same request as “fifty cents Split Pair 4X8.” The resulting tickets have different conditions. State the amount and style separately when ordering, then verify both on the issued record.

Other full-number choices include Any Order and Combo. They consider rearrangements of all three selected digits; a pair wager leaves one designated position unconstrained. Do not transfer the checking method from one style to the other.

Price the session and optional add-on separately

Pick 3 offers daily Day and Night drawings. Current sales cutoffs are 1:53 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. Eastern Time, before the respective 1:59 p.m. and 11 p.m. drawings. Buying after a cutoff is not a late entry into the closed event.

One fifty-cent Split Pair in each session costs $1 for the two entries. FIREBALL is optional and doubles the purchase cost, making those two entries $2 with the feature. It has a separate award schedule; doubling the price does not mean doubling the $25 base pair prize.

Check the feature status in the purchase record. A displayed FIREBALL result creates no entitlement on an entry that did not buy the add-on.

Keep the ticket until the complete check is finished

Verify date and session before matching the outside positions. Then confirm the style, amount and optional feature. Official checking is available online, in the Virginia Lottery app and at Lottery vending machines.

Sign and protect a retail ticket and follow the current claim instructions for a validated prize. Virginia draw-game prizes expire 180 days after the drawing, so saving an unchecked ticket indefinitely is not a claim plan.

The Virginia directory compares the other listed games. For Pick 3 Split Pair, keep the simple picture in mind: the X leaves the middle open; it does not move your outside digits.
