Virginia Cash 5: Separate the Nightly Draw from EZ Match

A practical Virginia Cash 5 guide covering its five-of-45 format, draw prizes, EZ Match, multi-draw tickets and the difference between repeats and extra dates.

Virginia Cash 5 can put two kinds of results on one purchase: an instant EZ Match result and an entry in the nightly drawing. Those results run on different clocks. An instant loss does not cancel the drawing entry, and an instant win does not mean the drawing has already been checked.

The most useful way to read this game is to separate three questions: what numbers did you enter, which drawing dates did you buy, and did you pay for the optional instant feature? Answering those questions first makes the rest of the ticket much easier to follow.

The drawing entry uses five numbers from forty-five

A basic play costs $1. Choose five different numbers from 1 through 45, or use the lottery’s Easy Pick option. Order does not matter when comparing your set with the five drawn numbers.

For example, 6, 18, 27, 34 and 45 is a valid selection. A printed winning set containing those same five numbers would be a complete match regardless of the order in which the balls appeared. There is no separate player-selected bonus ball in this game.

Virginia schedules the drawing nightly at 11 p.m. Eastern, with sales for that drawing closing at 10:45 p.m. Check the operator’s current schedule when buying near the cutoff. A ticket bought for a later date cannot win an earlier drawing just because its numbers happen to match.

Read the prize category before calculating the result

The published drawing chart pays $1 for two matches, $5 for three and $200 for four. Five matches reach the jackpot, which begins at $200,000 and grows until won. Multiple jackpot-winning plays share that jackpot.

Suppose your selection is 6, 18, 27, 34 and 45, and the winning numbers are 6, 11, 18, 27 and 40. You matched three numbers. That places the play in the $5 category; it does not produce three separate two-number prizes.

Similarly, matching two numbers gives a $1 drawing award. On a $1 basic play that equals the entry cost. If you also bought the $1 EZ Match option and received no instant award, the same $1 drawing result leaves you below the $2 purchase cost. Calling every prize a profit hides that distinction.

The jackpot is a shared prize category rather than a promise that every matching ticket receives the full advertised amount. Check the final official result and validation before treating an estimate as an amount owed to an individual winner.

EZ Match is a separate instant purchase

Adding EZ Match costs another $1 per play and creates an instant opportunity with a top award of $500. Compare the printed EZ Match numbers with your selected Cash 5 numbers and use the associated instant prize information. Do not compare those instant numbers with a later drawing to decide whether the instant feature won.

A simple ticket-reading routine helps: check the instant section when you receive the ticket, then keep the drawing section for its scheduled date. If you redeem an instant award while future entries remain, make sure the remaining entries are preserved through the lottery’s procedure.

The distinction matters especially for Multi-Draw. Virginia says EZ Match applies once per Multi-Draw ticket or online Auto-Renewal subscription. Buying several drawing dates does not turn one printed instant result into a new instant game each night.

Imagine the same line entered for seven drawings. There are seven scheduled drawing outcomes to check. The instant section does not refresh itself on days two through seven. Read the actual purchase details rather than assuming that every component repeats together.

Multi-Draw, Future Play and Repeat solve different tasks

Multi-Draw enters consecutive drawings. Future Play, available at retail, chooses a single later drawing. Repeat, also a retail option, buys the same selection more than once for the same drawing. They are different instructions, even though each can result in several dollars being spent on familiar numbers.

If your aim is to check one line over several evenings, verify the dates. If your aim is to hold several entries for one evening, verify the quantity. Saying “play this seven times” without specifying which meaning you intend invites a purchase you did not want.

Repeating an identical set in one drawing does not cover additional winning combinations. If that set misses, its identical copies miss too. Different sets cover different possible results, but they also cost more. Decide the total spend before adding dates, repetitions or instant features.

What the odds tell you about this particular game

Five numbers chosen from 45 produce 1,221,759 possible sets. A particular set therefore has a jackpot chance of 1 in 1,221,759 in one drawing. A random suggestion and a personally meaningful selection have the same probability when both are valid sets.

Virginia lists overall drawing-prize odds of approximately 1 in 11.44. That figure includes the $1 two-match award. It should not be interpreted as a jackpot probability or a guarantee of getting ahead after eleven purchases.

The state and game name matter when researching these figures. A Cash 5 page for another jurisdiction may describe a different number pool and different awards. Use this page for Virginia’s rules, and use the Virginia game directory when comparing it with the state’s other games, including Bank a Million.

Before putting a ticket away, check its dates and options. After the drawing, compare the correct five-number result and validate through the official lottery. Keep a record of any remaining draws so that an instant prize or an early drawing does not cause you to discard an entry that is still active.
