Pennsylvania PICK 4 Straight/Box combines a 50-cent Straight with a 50-cent Box. The total base purchase is $1, and the prizes must be read at the half-dollar level. It does not buy a full $1 stake in each component.
That is worth checking even if you already play Pennsylvania PICK 2, whose Straight/Box purchase uses a different allocation. Similar names do not establish the same stake. A repeated-zero PICK 4 example makes the difference clear without borrowing another state’s payout chart.
Keep both zeroes in a four-digit selection
Use the invented selection 0058. It contains four digits: two zeroes, a five and an eight. The leading zeroes are real positions, not formatting that can be discarded to turn the wager into 58.
Because there is one pair and two other distinct digits, 0058 belongs to the twelve-way Box category. The number of different orders is 4! divided by 2!, or twelve. Examples include 0058, 0085, 0508 and 8500.
A Box still requires the complete digit collection, including both zeroes. A result of 0588 does not qualify: it contains one zero and two eights. Familiar digit values alone are not the matching condition.
Add the two half-dollar awards for the selected order
Pennsylvania’s posted 50-cent Straight prize is $2,500. Its 50-cent twelve-way Box prize is $200. A $1 Straight/Box on 0058 therefore returns $2,700 gross if 0058 is drawn: $2,500 from the Straight component plus $200 from the Box component.
You do not add the $1 Box prize of $400 to that half-dollar Straight award. That would mix different stakes. Nor do you add a second Box amount after reaching $2,700; the Box component has already been counted.
The difference after the $1 base purchase in this example is $2,699. Keep that arithmetic separate from the advertised gross award and from any other tickets you bought for the same session.
A different covered order wins only the Box component
If the result is 8500, the selected Straight order 0058 has not appeared. The Box component does qualify, so the $1 Straight/Box returns $200 gross.
Compare three actual purchase types. A 50-cent Box on this pattern pays $200 for any covered order. A $1 Box pays $400 for any covered order. A $1 Straight/Box pays $2,700 for the selected order and $200 for another covered order.
Those purchases distribute the stake differently. The Straight/Box does not dominate a full-dollar Box simply because its largest possible award is higher. It places half the money on the exact-order condition and half on the any-order condition. Decide which wager you mean before the ticket is issued.
Different repeated-digit patterns have different Box rows
The posted half-dollar Box awards are $600 for three identical digits plus one different digit, $400 for two different pairs, $200 for one pair plus two other distinct digits, and $100 for four distinct digits.
For example, changing 0058 to 0055 creates two pairs, a six-way pattern. Changing it to 0008 creates a four-way pattern. Neither retains the twelve-way award merely because zero still appears more than once.
The category comes from the digit frequencies on your selection. It is not a category you choose after seeing which prize seems more attractive. All-identical digits have no different arrangement; do not treat a repeated display of the same sequence as extra Box coverage.
Do not copy PICK 2’s split or a Wild Ball payment
Pennsylvania’s PICK 2 guide explains its $2 Straight/Box purchase. That two-dollar allocation should not be carried into PICK 4, where the official definition expressly combines two 50-cent plays.
Wild Ball is another distinction. It doubles the purchase cost and has its own prize schedule. Adding it to our $1 base Straight/Box makes the purchase $2, but it does not turn the base components into full-dollar Straight and Box stakes.
The $2,700 and $200 examples above are base-game checks. If a result qualifies through Wild Ball, use the add-on rules and the appropriate stake rather than attaching an ordinary base prize to a replacement combination.
Confirm the session before interpreting the numbers
Pennsylvania offers Day and Evening drawings. The current guide lists sales cutoffs of 1:05 p.m. for Day and 6:57 p.m. for Evening, with Day results depicted after 1:35 p.m. and the Evening drawing at 6:59 p.m. A purchase deadline is not the same as a result time.
Check the issued ticket for 0058, Straight/Box, the drawing date and session, the complete cost and any add-on. Printed PICK 4 tickets cannot be cancelled or voided, even when printed in error. The ticket, not the playslip, is the valid proof used for a claim.

They show how to read the purchase you actually made, especially when two small components share one familiar wager name.
