Two Pick 4 selections can contain completely different digits and still have the same sum. That is the idea behind Idaho’s optional Sum it up! purchase. It is not permission to rearrange a losing exact-order ticket, and it does not turn the ordinary Pick 4 prize into a reward for getting “close.”
Keep two questions separate: did the digits satisfy the base wager, and did their total satisfy an optional sum wager you actually purchased? Confusing those questions is an easy way to misread this particular game.
Establish the base purchase before adding the sum
Idaho Pick 4 wagers start at $1. The game offers Exact Order, Any Order, Exact/Any Order, and Front, Mid or Back Pair wagers. The official chart lists a $5,000 exact-order prize for a $1 wager.
For a four-digit example, take 2047. An Exact Order purchase needs 2047, position for position. A result of 2074 has the same digits but is not an exact match. A result of 2048 agrees in three positions but is not a four-digit Exact Order win either.
Before handing over money, say the wager type along with the digits. Write a zero as a zero rather than leaving an empty column: 2047 and 247 are not interchangeable descriptions of a four-position selection.
Work the sum as a second, independent check
The total of 2047 is 13: 2 + 0 + 4 + 7. Suppose you bought Sum it up! and the hypothetical result is 3316. Its total is also 13, because 3 + 3 + 1 + 6 = 13. That satisfies the sum condition even though 3316 does not contain the digits on your base selection.
Conversely, 2048 totals 14. It looks much closer to 2047 on paper, but it fails both the exact-order test and the sum-13 test. Visual resemblance is not how this add-on is checked.
Make a small note of the total when reviewing your ticket. Do not replace or alter the printed selection; the note is only a calculation aid. After the draw, calculate the result’s total independently instead of counting how many positions look familiar.
A sum win has its own prize schedule
Sum it up! costs an additional $1 for each dollar wagered and cannot be added to Front, Mid or Back Pair wagers. The Lottery publishes a separate sum prize chart. A successful sum check is not automatically a $5,000 Exact Order prize.
The reason different totals need different rows is straightforward mathematics. The sum can range from 0 through 36. Only 0000 totals 0; only 9999 totals 36. Many different sequences produce totals nearer the middle. For example, 0004, 0013, 0022 and 0103 all total 4, and those are not the complete list.
That does not make an extreme total a clever bargain. Rarity and payout must be considered together, and neither creates a promise of profit. Use the operator’s row for the purchased sum rather than borrowing a prize figure from another state’s similarly named option.
Count the full cost across drawings
If you buy one $1 eligible base wager with Sum it up! for one drawing, the combined purchase is $2. Repeating that same purchase across ten drawings would cost $20: ten dollars for the base wagers and ten for the add-on.
Idaho permits multi-draw tickets for up to seventy consecutive drawings. At two sessions daily, that is not a seventy-day purchase. Review the actual first and last draws instead of inferring a date range from the number seventy.
An advance ticket is a prepaid series of separate events. A loss in its first event does not increase the mathematical value of the next event or justify buying a second series outside your original budget.
Use Mountain Time, not an assumed local clock
The official schedule places Pick 4 at 1:59 p.m. and 7:59 p.m. Mountain Time every day, with Idaho-only draw sales stopping five minutes before the drawing. If you are somewhere using Pacific Time, make that conversion before planning a purchase.
For example, a phone showing 1:00 p.m. Pacific corresponds to 2:00 p.m. Mountain. The Mountain Time midday drawing has already occurred. Looking only at the hour “1” in the advertised draw time would give the wrong impression.
Read the session printed on the ticket. A correctly remembered number checked against the wrong session is still an incorrect check.
Keep an uncancelable purchase from becoming a surprise
The operator says processed Pick 4 tickets cannot be canceled and prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the draw. Check digits, wager, optional feature, draw range and total cost immediately. Keep the original and use the official claiming guidance for a validated win.
The Idaho lottery directory is the place to compare other games. For this ticket, the habit worth keeping is simple: identify the base wager first, then calculate the optional sum separately.
