Delaware Play 5: Front Four Is a Separate Wager, Not a Near Miss

Map Play 5 Front 4, Back 4, Front 3 and pair wagers to their exact positions, preserve leading zeroes, and understand why a Straight partial match does not pay.

Four correct digits in Delaware Play 5 can describe a winning purchased condition or an unsuccessful Straight entry. The difference is what the ticket says. Front 4 is a wager you buy before the drawing, not a consolation category automatically awarded to every five-digit ticket.

Because Play 5 offers several shorter positional wagers, it helps to map them against one full result. That makes clear which digits matter and which positions are intentionally unrestricted.

Keep all five positions

Play 5 selects digits from 0 through 9, with leading zeroes and repetitions allowed. Use the hypothetical full result 03728. Read it as zero, three, seven, two, eight: five positions, not the ordinary four-digit number 3728.

A Straight selection on 03728 requires exactly that result. The game is a digit-selection format, so it should not be confused with a five-number lottery where different numbers are chosen from a larger pool and sorted afterward.

You can choose the digits or use Quick Pick. The method of choosing them does not change the wager's positional requirement or make a familiar selection more likely to arrive.

Put Front Four and Back Four side by side

For the result 03728, Front 4 checks 0372 in the first four positions. Back 4 checks 3728 in the final four positions. The unrestricted position is at a different end in each case.

A purchased Front 4 on 0372 can qualify on 03729. A purchased Back 4 on 3728 can qualify on 93728. Neither example wins Straight on 03728.

The location remains part of the condition. Finding the selected four digits somewhere inside a five-digit string is not sufficient if they occupy the wrong four positions. Write 0372X or X3728 if that helps keep the endpoints clear.

Shorter wagers still require the correct end

Front 3 checks the first three positions, while Back 3 checks the last three. For 03728, those are 037 and 728. Front Pair checks 03, and Back Pair checks 28.

A Front 3 wager on 037 leaves the final two positions unrestricted. It could qualify on 03700 or 03799. A Back 3 wager on 728 leaves the first two positions unrestricted and could qualify on 00728.

Do not move the chosen block along the result until it fits. Front 3 is the front three, not any three adjacent digits. Also do not assume that purchasing one positional wager automatically purchases the shorter wagers nested inside it.

Coverage changes with the required length

For a specified ordered five-digit Straight result, the matching chance is 1 in 100,000. Requiring four specified positions gives 1 in 10,000. Three specified positions gives 1 in 1,000, and a specified pair gives 1 in 100.

Those figures follow from ten possibilities in each required position. They describe the base matching conditions, not a comparison of payments. The prize schedule differs with the wager, so a broader condition should not be evaluated as if it paid the full five-digit Straight amount.

Delaware advertises Play 5 prizes up to $50,000. That headline does not apply automatically to Front 4, Back 3 or every wager amount. Use the current official chart for the exact purchase printed on your ticket.

Box is a different form of coverage

Box uses arrangements of the complete five-digit selection, rather than leaving an end unrestricted. A Box on 03728 still needs those five selected digits in a qualifying arrangement. A Front 4 on 0372 can qualify without an eight appearing at all.

Repeated digits affect the number of distinct arrangements in a Box selection. The count cannot be inferred merely from seeing five positions, and a favorite date is not automatically the same Box category as another five-digit selection.

Before buying, decide whether your intended task is exact five-position matching, rearrangement coverage, or a shorter positional wager. The play type should settle that question before any result gives you a tempting partial match.

Buy and check the correct session

The published basic wager choices are 50 cents and $1. Play 5 has daily Day and Night drawings at 1:58 p.m. and 7:57 p.m. Eastern, with sales ending at 1:40 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The advance instructions offer up to seven drawings ahead. Read the issued dates, session, wager and amount, then calculate the full cost across the coverage requested. Keep the original ticket secure and confirm potential wins through official validation.

For the state's other formats, see the Delaware game directory. For this game, a useful final question is very specific: did the result satisfy the positional wager I actually purchased, or am I noticing a shorter pattern inside a different losing wager?
