Mega Millions number matches explained
Do the numbers have to be in order?
No. The five white balls can match in any order, but the Mega Ball must match the separate Mega Ball result. A white-ball number does not substitute for the Mega Ball.
Do two numbers win anything?
Two white balls alone do not win. Two white balls together with the Mega Ball do qualify for a prize. The Mega Ball alone also qualifies. Compare the exact match category in the prize table rather than counting all matches as interchangeable.
Can I choose the multiplier in the generator?
No. The official multiplier is assigned at ticket purchase and applies to non-jackpot prizes. This tool generates only the five white-ball numbers and the Mega Ball.
Format and match categories checked October 18, 2026 against the official Mega Millions prize chart.

Optional features
Every $5 play includes a randomly assigned 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X multiplier printed on the ticket. It applies to all eight non-jackpot tiers, producing prizes from $10 through $10 million. Players do not buy it separately or select its value, and it never multiplies the jackpot. These are the current rules introduced for the April 8, 2025 drawing.
How the jackpot rolls over
If nobody matches all five white balls and the Mega Ball, the jackpot rolls forward. Starting values and increases depend on sales and interest rates rather than a fixed guaranteed increment.
How shared jackpots work
Multiple jackpot tickets split the jackpot pool. The advertised amount is an annuity and a cash option is available. California non-jackpot payouts are pari-mutuel.
Regional differences
Mega Millions is governed by participating U.S. lotteries. Claim periods, purchase rules, taxes and anonymity differ. California prizes are pari-mutuel and may differ from the fixed ranges shown.
Cash option versus annuity
A jackpot winner may choose a one-time cash payment equal to the cash in the jackpot prize pool or the Powerball annuity: 30 graduated payments over 29 years, consisting of one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments. Each annuity payment generally increases by 5% from the previous payment. The advertised jackpot is the annuity value, so the cash option is lower. Both options are advertised before federal and any applicable state or local taxes. The selling lottery controls the election procedure and deadline. This guide does not provide personalized financial advice; winners should obtain qualified legal and tax advice before choosing.
Ticket deadlines and state-by-state differences
The official drawing is Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Sales close earlier, but there is no single nationwide cut-off. Each state or jurisdiction sets its own deadline, purchase age, retailer and online-sales rules, claim window, validation process and cash-versus-annuity election deadline. Check the official lottery where the ticket is purchased before the draw.
Winner privacy and anonymity
Anonymity laws differ by state, jurisdiction, prize amount and sometimes the legal structure used to claim. Some lotteries must disclose a winner’s name and location, while others permit anonymity or a claim through a qualifying trust or legal entity. Because these rules change, this guide does not publish a short state list that could become outdated. Check the official selling lottery’s current disclosure policy and consult a qualified local attorney before claiming or speaking publicly.
Federal and state taxes
The IRS treats lottery winnings as taxable gambling income. Federal withholding on qualifying lottery prizes is generally 24%, but withholding is not necessarily the winner’s final federal tax bill. State and sometimes local income taxes may also apply, while several states do not tax lottery prizes. Residency and where the ticket was bought can matter. This is educational information, not individualized tax or financial advice; large winners should consult qualified advisers.
How to secure and claim a winning ticket
- Compare the numbers with the official game result and the selling lottery’s result page.
- Secure the original ticket and follow the selling lottery’s instructions about signing it; rules for group or entity claims can differ.
- Photograph or copy the ticket for records without posting it publicly.
- Check the claim deadline and cash-option election deadline immediately.
- For a major prize, obtain qualified legal, tax and financial advice before publicity, transfers or promises.
- Claim only through the jurisdiction that sold the ticket; official validation determines whether it is a winner.
Independence and final authority
How To Win The Jackpot provides educational information and free number generators. It does not sell tickets and is not affiliated with Mega Millions, MUSL or any state lottery. Official operators and the lottery that sold a ticket are the final authority.
Results and claiming
Use the official Mega Millions winning-numbers page and confirm with the selling lottery.
Validate and claim through the jurisdiction that sold the ticket. Secure a potentially winning ticket and consult qualified advisers before making major decisions.
Responsible play
Lottery play is paid entertainment with a likely loss. Set a fixed limit, never chase losses, never borrow to play, and stop if it causes stress or financial harm. A generated line is no more likely to win than a personally chosen valid line.
Frequently asked questions
Can a number generator predict Mega Millions results?
No. It creates a valid random line; it cannot predict an independent draw or improve the chance of any combination.
Are Quick Picks better than personal numbers?
No. Every valid line has the same mathematical probability, however it was selected.
Does buying more lines improve the odds?
Distinct extra lines increase total coverage in direct proportion to the extra cost, but each line keeps the same odds and the chance remains very small.
What happens when several tickets win?
The jackpot pool is divided among all valid jackpot-winning tickets under the official rules.
How much does a play cost?
A play costs $5 under the game launched in April 2025, including a randomly assigned multiplier.
When are drawings?
Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Local sales close earlier.
Can I choose the multiplier?
No. A 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X multiplier is randomly assigned when the ticket is bought.
Why can California prizes differ?
California law uses pari-mutuel payouts, so non-jackpot prizes can differ from the published ranges elsewhere.
Where must I claim?
The ticket must be validated and claimed in the jurisdiction where it was purchased.
Where are official results?
Use MegaMillions.com and confirm through the official selling lottery.
